Order 66: The Crippling of the Jedi Order Until A New Hope

Order 66 was a hidden Sith protocol that branded all Jedi as traitors, triggering a galaxy-wide massacre by clone troopers. Orchestrated by Chancellor Palpatine, this single order shattered the Jedi Order, led to the rise of the Galactic Empire, and forever changed Star Wars history. Survivors like Ahsoka Tano, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Cal Kestis carried on the Jedi legacy in secret.

Order 66: The Crippling of the Jedi Order Until A New Hope

Order 66 stands as one of the darkest turning points in the entire Star Wars saga, a moment that redefined the galaxy and forever shattered the Jedi Order.

Conceived in secret and executed with chilling efficiency, this protocol reclassified every Jedi—be they Jedi Knight, Jedi Master, or Jedi Padawan—as enemies of the Galactic Republic.

When Chancellor Palpatine, known secretly as Sith Lord Darth Sidious, gave the command during the final days of the Clone Wars, thousands of clone troopers turned on their Jedi generals without hesitation. The betrayal was swift, brutal, and absolute.

From the halls of the Jedi Temple to distant battlefronts across the stars, the death toll mounted with terrifying speed. This event not only marked the death of the Jedi High Council and the collapse of the Republic, but also cleared the path for the rise of the Galactic Empire. Characters like Ahsoka Tano, Cal Kestis, and Kanan Jarrus would emerge as surviving Jedi who bore witness to the purge’s devastation.

Even George Lucas, in crafting Episode III, made clear that Order 66 was a central tragedy in the transition from the Old Republic to the era of Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader. In the sections that follow, we explore the origins, mechanics, victims, survivors, and legacy of a single command that reshaped galactic history.

Description

Order 66, officially one of the 150 contingency orders created for the Grand Army of the Republic, was designed to compel clone troopers to execute Jedi without hesitation or question.

The mechanism of control came through inhibitor chips implanted during cloning. Once activated, the chip would override a clone’s free will, transforming them into a tool of absolute obedience.

The Jedi, once seen as peacekeepers and generals, were instantly recast as enemies of the state. In some rare cases, clones managed to resist the chip’s influence, but for the majority, there was no escape from its hold.

The Sith in Hiding

The foundation for Order 66 was laid over a thousand years before its execution.

Following their defeat in the last great war against the Jedi, the Sith retreated into the shadows. Darth Bane’s Rule of Two ensured that the Sith would operate in secrecy, biding their time for a final, decisive blow.

Generations later, Darth Sidious—known publicly as Sheev Palpatine—positioned himself within the Galactic Republic, orchestrating a conflict that would give him full control over the galaxy and the clone army.

Warning Signs

Before the Jedi Purge commenced, there were moments when the truth nearly surfaced.

Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas foresaw a coming war and commissioned the creation of a clone army. Unbeknownst to him, the Sith had already infiltrated the project.

Clones were engineered with biochips intended to enforce total loyalty. The Jedi remained unaware of this manipulation, even when visions and behavioral anomalies—like those seen in clone troopers Tup and Fives—hinted at a darker conspiracy.

Uncovering the Evidence

ARC Trooper Fives came closer than anyone to uncovering the true nature of the biochips. After the mysterious behavior and subsequent death of his brother-in-arms Tup, Fives uncovered the chip and linked it to a larger plot.

His attempt to warn the Jedi led to a confrontation with Chancellor Palpatine himself. Branded as a traitor, Fives was killed before he could reveal the truth. His demise buried the conspiracy, allowing the Sith to continue their plan undisturbed.

Execution

The moment Order 66 was issued, the Jedi across the galaxy were struck down by the clones they commanded. From the icy bridges of Mygeeto to the jungle plains of Felucia, Jedi fell in ambushes orchestrated with brutal efficiency.

On Coruscant, Darth Vader—once Anakin Skywalker—led the 501st Legion in an assault on the Jedi Temple, slaying younglings and Masters alike with his lightsaber

Communication relays broadcast the order repeatedly, ensuring full compliance across the Grand Army. With a single command, the Jedi Order was shattered.

Spared Jedi

Not every Jedi perished in the purge. Some, like Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda, survived due to a combination of foresight and skill.

Others, such as Ahsoka Tano and Kanan Jarrus, escaped through luck and the intervention of clones who managed to resist their chips.

A select few were spared intentionally, approached by the clones with a message from Darth Sidious himself. Those who accepted his offer became some of the first Inquisitors.

Non-Jedi Targets

Though Order 66 was directed at Jedi, its reach extended further. Force-sensitives, dark side users, and even civilians suspected of aiding Jedi became targets.

Ahsoka Tano, despite having left the Jedi Order, was hunted relentlessly. Former Sith like Maul and dissenting clones such as Rex and the Bad Batch also found themselves in danger. The order became a tool not only for extermination, but also for silencing opposition.

Aftermath

The Jedi who survived went into hiding, many abandoning their identities entirely. Obi-Wan and Yoda retreated to remote exile, while others attempted to rebuild what had been lost. The galaxy, however, was quick to accept the new Imperial narrative.

The Jedi were labeled traitors, and the public applauded their destruction. The Empire’s rise was cemented not through war, but through calculated manipulation and the silencing of dissent.

Aftermath for the Clones

Initially hailed as heroes, the clones were soon discarded by the Empire. The chips that once controlled them began to fail, and with growing awareness came disillusionment.

Some clones, like Commander Cody and Captain Howzer, began to question their orders. Others removed their chips entirely and became fugitives. Replaced by stormtroopers, the clones were cast aside—tools no longer needed.

Legacy

Order 66 did not end with the fall of the Jedi. Its influence echoed throughout the Empire’s reign. The Inquisitorius, composed of fallen Jedi, hunted survivors across the stars. Force-sensitive children were abducted and trained in the dark side.

Artifacts, texts, and symbols of the Jedi were declared contraband. Yet in the shadows, a new generation emerged.

Luke Skywalker, Ahsoka Tano, and others carried forward the Jedi legacy, proving that even the darkest purge could not extinguish the light.

Known Victims

Thousands perished during Order 66, among them some of the Jedi Order’s most revered figures. Ki-Adi-Mundi, Plo Koon, Aayla Secura, Stass Allie, and Depa Billaba were all struck down.

Even younglings, like Zett Jukassa and Whie Malreaux, were not spared. Their deaths marked not just a military loss, but the erasure of a tradition that had stood for millennia.

Known Survivors

Despite the scale of the purge, a small number survived. Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda, Ahsoka Tano, Cal Kestis, and Kanan Jarrus are among the most well-known.

Others, like Grogu, Kelleran Beq, and Quinlan Vos, escaped into obscurity. Some survivors went on to rebuild the Jedi path, while others, disillusioned, walked away from it entirely. The survival of these few ensured that the Jedi would endure.

Behind the Scenes

Order 66 was first introduced in Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. Its execution in the film, brutal and sudden, left a lasting impact on audiences.

Later works such as The Clone Wars and The Bad Batch expanded the narrative, adding emotional depth and historical context.

Writers like Dave Filoni and George Lucas crafted its depiction to reflect the tragedy of betrayal and the fall of a great order.

Unused and Rejected Concepts

Earlier drafts of Revenge of the Sith featured even more extensive Jedi deaths. Characters like Barriss Offee and Luminara Unduli were originally slated to be killed on-screen. Some versions even had Boba Fett participate, seeking revenge for his father’s death.

These ideas were later removed or reworked to streamline the film, though some elements persisted in other media.

Conclusion

The impact of Order 66 cannot be overstated.

It was the linchpin in a plan that had simmered since the days of the Old Republic and was executed with a precision that only Palpatine’s manipulations could achieve. As the Jedi Temple burned and the Clone Wars gave way to the rule of the Galactic Empire, the galaxy was thrust into what came to be known as the Jedi Purge.

In its wake, Jedi like Shaak Ti, Plo Koon, and Mace Windu were lost, while others such as Obi-Wan Kenobi, Ahsoka Tano, and Kelleran Beq were forced into hiding. The purge reached from the depths of the Jedi Archive to the battlefield, from the Jedi High Council to untrained Padawans. And yet, from the ashes of the Jedi Order, stories of resistance endured.

Cere Junda, Cal Kestis, and Ezra Bridger carried the flame forward. By the time of the original trilogy, the Jedi were thought extinct, but the legend of their fall—echoed in tales of Boba Fett, Count Dooku, and Ben Solo—remained woven into the mythology of the Force.

Whether through the eyes of survivors like Kanan Jarrus or in whispers of other surviving Jedi, the memory of Order 66 continues to echo. It remains one of the most tragic chapters in Star Wars.
